adidas Terrex showed the first Free Hiker at an outdoor trade show in 2018, and the pitch was straightforward: take the two things people already liked about the brand's running shoes (a Primeknit upper and a Boost midsole) and build a hiking boot out of them.
Nothing else in the category looked like it. Hiking boots at the time were leather or heavy synthetic, stiff through the midsole, and slow to break in. The Free Hiker was a knitted sock with a high collar, soft underfoot from the first mile, and light enough that its weight became the headline in most reviews.
The compromises showed up in the details. A Continental rubber outsole handled traction, and water resistance came from the knit's treatment rather than a full membrane, which later versions addressed directly. In core black it loses the outdoor signalling entirely and reads as a boot-shaped trainer.
