Jason Dill and Anthony Van Engelen started Fucking Awesome in 2014 as a skateboard company, and it spent its first years building a following on video parts and board graphics rather than footwear. Dill's move onto the adidas Skate team was announced in October 2018, and the collaborative work that followed reached back into adidas' oldest catalogue rather than its skate one.
The shoe they picked was the Stan Smith, a tennis model from 1965, originally sold under French player Robert Haillet's name and renamed for Smith in 1978, whose entire visual signature is three rows of punched holes standing in for three stripes. It is about as far from a skate shoe as adidas' archive goes.
This orange pair takes the loudest position in the September 2019 group of four. The upper is tumbled leather in a flat orange, the eyelets are matte metal rather than plated, and the heel is cut asymmetrically instead of squared off. The perforated stripes survive, but only on the medial side; the lateral quarter gets a gold pin instead. The cupsole is black rather than white and carries the brand's logo along the bottom. It listed at $110.
