The shoe being altered here started life in 1965 as the adidas Robert Haillet, a leather tennis model named for the French player it was built around. When Stan Smith signed with adidas in 1973 the company printed both names on the tongue for several years before dropping Haillet's in 1978 and giving the shoe the name it still carries. Its defining detail was a subtraction rather than an addition: instead of three stripes down the side, three rows of punched holes. It has sold in the tens of millions since, was pulled from production around 2011, and was brought back in 2014.
Fucking Awesome came at it from the opposite end of footwear. Jason Dill and Anthony Van Engelen founded the skateboard company in 2014, and Dill was announced to the adidas Skate team in October 2018; the Stan Smith series followed under adidas Skateboarding.
This white pair is the plainest of the four-shoe run and the closest to the original. Tumbled leather replaces the smooth finish, matte metal eyelets sit in the lace holes, the heel is cut asymmetrically, and a small gold badge takes the place of the perforated stripes on the lateral quarter. It released in September 2019 at $110.
