Black leather, a side zip and two sets of latitude and longitude: this is the Stan Smith from the July 2018 adidas Consortium 'Cages & Coordinates' pack, made with Tokyo's mita sneakers. The upper is black leather and the signature detail is white type: one string of numbers locates mita's shop in Tokyo, the other adidas's headquarters in Germany, both set over the toe box. A zipper runs along the lateral panel so the shoe opens wide without touching the laces, and loops at the heel give something to pull on. It released July 7, 2018, at $160.
Half the pack name reads literally on the shoe. The coordinates are the two addresses that the collaboration joins, a sneaker shop in Tokyo and a sportswear headquarters in Germany, printed in white so they stand off the black leather; the deconstructed build, with its zip and heel loops, is the part that separates this from a stock Stan Smith in black. It is one of the few Stan Smith collaborations that changes how the shoe is put on rather than only what is printed on it, which puts it in the same small group as the Raf Simons Comfort Badge with its strap closure. The black-and-white scheme keeps it wearable despite the hardware, and at $160 it sat well below fashion-house Stan Smiths while still arriving through adidas's Consortium line.
