The Cumulus is the shoe ASICS points people toward when they want a neutral trainer without paying flagship money, and it has run through more than two decades of numbered updates on that brief. The 23rd version, released in 2021, held the price at $120 and the drop at 10mm while reworking what sits underfoot.
The midsole gained a full-length lower layer of FlyteFoam, and the upper layer gained 3D Space Construction, a grid of small pillars meant to compress under load without letting the platform roll sideways. GEL stays in the heel, as it has for the life of the line. Above that, the upper moved to a softer engineered mesh built partly from recycled material.
Reviewers generally read it as a softer shoe than the 22, better across long easy mileage than fast work. This black pair with red came in mid-2021, one of several sober colourways for a shoe that has never traded on looks.
