Gel-Cumulus has been ASICS' unglamorous neutral trainer for over two decades (the model that sits below the Nimbus and above the entry-level shoes), and for most of that run its updates were small. The twenty-fifth version was not.
ASICS replaced the exposed rearfoot Gel with PureGEL, a lighter and softer internal unit, and moved the midsole from FF Blast to FF Blast+, the softest foam in its catalogue at the time. The shoe gained roughly two millimetres of cushioning and lost about eight-tenths of an ounce in the same step. A women's pair weighs around eight ounces on a 36.5mm heel and 28.5mm forefoot, an 8mm drop; the men's runs 9.3 ounces.
Some of the apparent jump in stack figures is a measurement change rather than a design one; ASICS began counting midsole, outsole and tooling together from this generation, which makes year-on-year comparisons with the twenty-fourth misleading. Rubber coverage was also pared back to save weight, with fewer flex grooves for a snappier push-off.
The engineered jacquard upper was redrawn for breathability and moved to over ninety per cent recycled material, up from about seventy, and a heel pull-tab was added. Soothing Sea with Glow Yellow is a summer colour from that launch year, dated 6 June 2023.
