Converse simplified the Chuck Taylor over decades, thinning the canvas and lowering the rubber foxing as the shoe moved from athletic equipment to a cheap lifestyle staple. The Chuck 70, introduced in 2013, is the correction: a return to the 1970s specification with heavier twelve-ounce canvas, a taller and glossier off-white foxing strip, more substantial stitching and a vintage-style heel patch, with a modern cushioned insole added because nobody actually wants a 1970s footbed. The result costs more than the standard model and feels like a different object in the hand. This version scatters a star motif across the vintage white canvas in green with a yellow accent, printed rather than layered, which suits an upper with almost no structure to interrupt it. The high-top silhouette is otherwise unchanged from the shoe the basketball player lent his name to in the 1930s, which makes the model one of the longest continuously produced designs in footwear, and the reason a graphic treatment reads as a variation rather than as a redesign.
