The Chuck Taylor All Star has been in production since 1917, and the version sold today is not the version that made it famous. Converse simplified the shoe through the early 1980s (thinner canvas, less stitching, a flat insole), and that cost-reduced build became the default.
The Chuck 70, reintroduced under that name in 2017, reverses those changes. The canvas is heavier, the rubber sidewall sits several millimetres higher, the stitching is doubled, and the midsole and toe cap carry a varnish that gives the rubber an aged off-white cast rather than a bright one. Inside, there is real cushioning and arch support.
The logo patch differs too, the Chuck 70 carrying the older-style mark. This pair breaks from plain canvas, mixing textures across the upper in cedar brown and navy.
