Twill and plain weave are the two common ways to build a cotton cloth, and they behave differently. A plain weave, which is what standard Chuck canvas uses, crosses every thread over and under in sequence and sits flat. A twill runs the weft over two or more warp threads before going under, producing the diagonal ridges visible on a pair of chinos and giving the cloth more drape and a better habit of hiding dirt.
