This Legacy build puts the dark tone on the overlay set, so the toe cap, the saddle carrying the N, the eyestay and the heel counter are outlined against a white body and the pattern of the shoe is readable from across a street. It is the most legible way to colour a 574 and also the least forgiving, since white suede shows every mark it picks up.
New Balance sells this one in the Legacy tier at $100, above what the standard version of the model costs. The heel is ENCAP, an EVA core with a rigid polyurethane collar around it, unchanged from the shoe Steven Smith built by setting a 576 upper on a 577 bottom. White and navy has run on the brand's running models for decades, long enough to be read as heritage rather than as a decision, and on a silhouette this old that association does real work: the colours tell you what era the shape comes from before you have looked at the shape.
