The shoe underneath this one is ordinary Nike basketball hardware. The colors are not. Tinker Hatfield sketched a self-fastening sneaker in 1989 for a film whose second half was set in 2015, and Nike then spent a quarter of a century catching up to its own prop: a self-lacing patent filed in April 2009, a charity auction of 1,500 non-lacing tribute pairs in September 2011 with proceeds going to Parkinson's disease research, and finally a genuinely motorized run of 89 pairs in 2016.
Power lacing reached a consumer model in March 2016, and by the time the second-generation Adapt basketball shoe arrived, a motor in the midsole was a feature rather than a stunt. This September 2020 pair is the darker of two takes on that heritage palette, and the listing is the UK-charger configuration, meaning the wireless mat in the box takes a UK plug.
What makes the reference work is that it is functional rather than graphic. There is no film logo anywhere on the shoe. The tribute is that it tightens itself, which is the one thing the 1989 drawing actually promised.
