Nike has been chasing a drawing for more than thirty years. The self-fastening shoe Tinker Hatfield designed in 1989 for a sequel set partly in 2015 existed only as a film prop; the version on screen did not really lace itself. Nike filed a self-lacing patent in April 2009, sold 1,500 non-motorized tribute pairs by online auction in September 2011 with the proceeds going to Parkinson's research, and in 2016 finally shipped a working motorized edition, 89 pairs distributed by raffle.
The technology stopped being ceremonial in March 2016, when power lacing reached a consumer model. The Adapt basketball line then put a motor and a phone app into a shoe meant to be played in, tightening on command and holding fit settings between sessions. Its second generation is where the tribute finally makes sense: a shoe that laces itself, wearing the colors of the shoe that promised it would.
