About the Nike Air Foamposite One "Denim"

When the Foamposite One reached the court in 1997, nothing on a basketball floor looked like it. Eric Avar had been working on a shell inspired by the carapace of a beetle, and the manufacturing followed from that idea rather than from shoemaking: liquid polyurethane poured into a mould, cured under heat and pressure, and released as one continuous piece of upper with no panels and no stitching. Penny Hardaway saw a sample in a bag during a meeting with Avar and claimed it. He debuted it in the 1997 playoffs.

Underneath the shell sit a Zoom Air unit and a carbon-fibre shank through the midfoot, so the shoe was a genuine performance model rather than a sculpture.

The denim edition does something the original construction was not designed for. A textile finish is applied over the moulded shell, so the shoe reads as fabric while still being one rigid piece, with nubuck around the eyestay and a translucent outsole below. Nike coated the denim with a water-repellent treatment, since a fabric-faced shell would otherwise stain in weather the standard version shrugs off.
