The Air Max 97 'Michigan' takes its name from its colour scheme, a white leather upper set off by university gold and dark obsidian across the wave overlays and heel branding. Nike released the pair in April 2023 at $175, in a leather build rather than the mesh construction used on several of the model's general releases.
The gold and dark obsidian trace the wave lines that have marked the silhouette since 1997, while a visible Air unit still runs the length of the sole beneath the leather and the upper keeps the model's hidden lacing system. The 'Michigan' name here describes the finished colour palette, white leather offset by warm gold and a near-black obsidian, rather than pointing to a particular release story.
