Gum rubber is a skater's preference for practical reasons. The softer, translucent compound holds a board's grip tape and a concrete ledge better than most hard-wearing black rubber, and it wears visibly, showing exactly where a shoe is being used. Nike SB has offered it on the Dunk since the programme began. What makes a pair like this one worth noticing is how ordinary it is: the line is remembered for collaborations and story-driven colourways, but most of what it actually shipped was plain, sold as an everyday shoe rather than as an event. The differences from the basketball original are all internal anyway: a thickly padded tongue and collar protecting the top of the foot from board impact, and a Zoom Air unit in the insole. Black across the upper over gum is the version that never dates.
