Concepts, the Cambridge shop that had already built a Nike SB Dunk around a lobster in 2008, returned to the theme the following year with a far rarer animal: the blue lobster, which turns up roughly once in every two million caught. The upper is speckled the way a shell is rather than blocked in flat colour, a rubber band wraps the toe the way one clamps a claw, and the lining is checkerboard, the tablecloth of every seafood shack on the New England coast. The release came with a full kit rather than a box: a cracker, a fork, a bib, a wet nap, spare laces and a shirt, all carrying an invented fishing company's branding, with skate decks going to the earliest buyers. The campaign ran the same joke, staging fake news coverage of a catch. It arrived in June 2009, when a single shop could still shape how an entire model was understood, and it turned the lobster into a recurring series the skate line has gone back to repeatedly since. Underneath the theme it remains a standard skate Dunk: padded tongue, reinforced collar, Zoom Air in the heel.
