Slam City Skates opened in London in 1986 and spent the following two decades as the shop the British scene organised itself around, which is why Nike SB gave it a Dunk in 2005. The design is loaded with in-jokes rather than branding. Light taupe and black suede carry the upper with white contrast stitching, and the Swoosh is finished in a material that scuffs away as the shoe is skated, so a worn pair looks visibly different from a stored one, a deliberate reversal of the usual collector logic. The tongues carry a caricature, and the insoles are printed with a map of the city's skate shops, which turns the shoe into a document of a scene rather than an advertisement for one. Rubber panels at the toe handle the ollie wear. It arrived in the autumn of 2005, during the stretch when a single shop could still determine how a colourway was understood.
