Eric Haze came out of New York graffiti in the 1970s and moved into commercial design, drawing logos and album packaging for hip-hop artists through the 1980s and 1990s. His 2003 Nike Dunks (a high and a low, released together) take the overspray effect of a spray can as the entire design: the upper fades from white through medium grey into black, with the gradient laid across the panels rather than blocked into them. Nike had not put that treatment on a Dunk before, and the pair is usually cited as the first to carry it. It arrived at a point when the model was being rediscovered outside skating, with the company beginning to hand the silhouette to artists and shops rather than treating it as basketball inventory, and gradient uppers followed across the industry for years afterwards. This is the low, in white, black and grey, released in the summer of 2003.
