Patent leather behaves differently to the tumbled or smooth finishes the Air Force 1 usually wears. It reflects rather than absorbs, so panel edges catch hard highlights and the shoe looks wetter and more graphic in photographs than it does in person. On a pale blue that effect is strongest in daylight. Nike kept the branding quiet to compensate. There is a badge on the tongue, the Swooshes on the panels, and a heel badge debossed into the material instead of stitched on top of it, which suits a surface that would show every extra seam.
Underneath, the basketball design is intact: an encapsulated Air unit, a rubber cupsole, and the tread pattern the model has carried since 1982, cut for a hardwood court rather than a pavement.
