Reebok got into inflatable footwear by accident. It bought the ski and tennis brand Ellesse in 1988 and inherited an inflatable tongue design made for ski boots, then set up an advanced concepts group with the design firm Design Continuum to turn the idea into a basketball shoe. The Pump launched in November 1989, and Dee Brown inflating a pair before his winning dunk at the 1991 slam dunk contest put it on national television.
The Instapump Fury, designed by Steven Smith and released in 1994, pushed the concept to its conclusion. If the bladder does the holding, the shoe does not need laces, so it has none. The upper is a sculpted asymmetric shell wrapped around an inflatable chamber, with Hexalite, a honeycomb cushioning structure, in the sole and a split midsole underneath.
Almost nothing about it looks like a shoe from the year it was made, which is why it has stayed in production while most of its contemporaries have not.
