The Pump did not begin at Reebok. Leonardo Servadio, who founded Ellesse, had built an inflatable ski boot; Reebok bought Ellesse in 1988, and chief executive Paul Fireman put together an innovation group that worked with the firm Design Continuum on applying the same principle to shoes. The first Pump went on sale on 24 November 1989, the first shoe with an internal inflation mechanism that let the wearer tune the fit around the tongue and collar by hand.
The Instapump Fury followed in 1994, designed by Steven Smith, who had drawn the New Balance 574 six years earlier out of parts from two other models. The Fury is the opposite instinct: a shoe with no conventional lacing at all, its fit handled entirely by the inflatable chamber, split into two halves connected across the midfoot.
This version was built with Concepts for the model's twentieth year in 2014. The upper carries a set of nineties-style patterns printed edge to edge, with suede lining the toe, a pink pump for contrast and Hexalite in the midsole. It listed at $170.
