Eric Swenson and Fausto Vitello already ran Independent Truck Company when they started Thrasher in January 1981, and the magazine existed at first to promote it. That is not how it ended up. Based in San Francisco and running a circulation of roughly a quarter of a million, it became the publication skateboarding treats as its record of itself, and the Skater of the Year award it began handing out in 1990 is still the sport's most weighted honour. It was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2017 and remains under the founding family's control.
Vans has an equally long claim on the same ground: a shoe company that skateboarders adopted rather than one that courted them, using a slang phrase as its motto from 1976 onward.
The shoe is the plainest possible carrier for the collaboration: a black Sk8-Hi with the magazine's logo repeated across the entire upper, collar to toe, over the standard vulcanised sole. It released in September 2022 at $100.
