In March 2021 Vans rebuilt its classics for people who actually skate in them. The Skate Classics line kept the outward shapes of the Sk8-Hi, Old Skool, Era, Authentic and Slip-On and changed nearly everything inside: a reshaped DuraCap underlay beneath the area an ollie destroys, a grippier proprietary rubber compound, and a foam footbed engineered not to pack flat after a few sessions. From any distance the shoe looks like the one it has always been, and underfoot it behaves differently. Glow-in-the-dark skulls are an old novelty, but putting them on a skate build rather than a fashion one gives the graphic somewhere honest to live. This is a shoe intended to be worn hard, so the print is meant to wear away rather than be preserved in a box.
