The Ultraboost was a running shoe for roughly a year. Launched in 2015, it combined three adidas technologies at once (a Primeknit upper, a full Boost midsole and a Continental rubber outsole), and the running press received it politely before everyone else decided it was something different: a shoe worn with tailoring, on flights and in offices, selling in volumes no marathon audience could account for. Once that happened the brand began building versions aimed at the new buyer rather than the old one. S&L stands for suede and leather, a materials treatment adding panels at the toe and heel where a performance build would have left the knit uninterrupted. None of it makes the shoe run better. It makes the shoe read as a considered object instead of as equipment, which by the end of the decade was what most of its buyers wanted from it.
