ASICS updated the Gel-Trabuco for spring 2023 around protection rather than weight. The eleventh version carried a forefoot rock plate, a reworked ASICSGrip outsole compound and FF Blast foam, with a heel stack near 35mm and about 27mm at the forefoot, enough cushioning that testers described it as a shoe for heel strikers running long over rough ground.
Grip was the change people noticed. Reviewers who had run the previous generation reported the updated compound holding on wet rock and loose descents at a level they compared to specialist trail outsoles, which had not been the line's reputation. Lug depth stayed moderate, aimed at mixed terrain rather than deep mud.
The name is older than the shoe. Trabuco is a Spanish word for a blunderbuss, borrowed in turn from Arabic, and it also names a canyon and creek in southern California. ASICS has never made much of the connection.
This blacked-out pair, released on 5 June 2023, came several months after the model's opening colorways and takes the plainest route available: full black mesh with neon lime confined to the branding and lace hardware. At 140 dollars it sat mid-pack among trail shoes offering this much underfoot protection.
