Waterproof trail shoes divide the people who use them. A membrane keeps out rain, splash and wet grass, which is the whole difference between a tolerable winter run and a miserable one. It also keeps water in once depth goes over the collar, and stream crossings are common enough that plenty of experienced runners deliberately choose a mesh shoe that drains and dries instead.
