Version 29 marks the end of an era for the GEL-Kayano, and it helps to know what came next to see what it was. The 29 stands on 25mm of stack at the heel and 15mm at the forefoot, with FF Blast Plus in the midsole and a dual-density DuoMax post on the medial side doing the anti-pronation work, the method ASICS had used on this shoe since its early years.
The thirtieth version threw that out. Stack went to 40mm and 30mm, the post was replaced by a 4D Guidance System built from a wider base and raised sidewalls, and the GEL moved inside as PureGEL. The 29 is therefore the firmer, lower, more traditional ride, and for runners who want a post rather than geometry it remains the reference point in the line.
The series began in 1993 under ASICS designer Toshikazu Kayano. Dusk Violet with Summer Dune is a warm-cool pairing rather than the blue the line usually wears.
