Converse was founded in Malden, Massachusetts in February 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse as a rubber shoe company. It moved into basketball in 1916, and by 1917 was selling the All Star. The shoe that came out of that is the one people still recognize: canvas upper, rubber toe cap, a five-pointed star on the ankle patch, and a loose inner lining of soft canvas meant to flex without raising blisters.
Chuck Taylor, a semi-professional player, joined as a salesman in the early 1920s and pushed changes for flexibility and ankle support. His name went onto the ankle patch, which made the All Star the first athletic shoe endorsed by a named player, and he kept working for the company until shortly before his death in 1969. Nike bought Converse in July 2003.
The Chuck 70, introduced in 2013, rebuilds the shoe to its 1960s and 1970s specification: heavier canvas, a taller rubber midsole, a smaller toe cap, reinforced sidewall stitching and a one-piece sole.
