For its first sixteen years the Air Jordan 1 came back only as itself. Peter Moore's 1985 design had four original colorways, and the retros that followed reproduced them; a version in a combination the shoe had never worn was simply not something the line did.
That changed in Japan in 2001. Four colorways were made for that market alone, and none of them corresponded to anything from the original run, the first time the silhouette was treated as a canvas rather than an archive piece. It is a small distinction on paper and a large one in practice, because nearly every collaborative and made-for-purpose Air Jordan 1 since descends from that decision.
This one is the most conservative of the group and the most durable-looking for it: a plain white leather upper, navy Jumpman embroidery on the leather tongue, and the same navy repeated in the collar lining, the outsole and the Wings logo stamped at the lateral ankle. It is dated August 2001.
