Art Basel began in 1970 as a single fair in Basel, founded by three Swiss gallerists, and has since expanded into a circuit of events in Hong Kong, Paris and Miami Beach. The Miami edition was meant to open in 2001 and was pushed back a year after the September attacks; since 2002 it has run in early December at the Miami Beach Convention Center, and it has become the anchor of what the city now treats as a full art week.
That week has also become a fixture on the sneaker calendar, and Nike has repeatedly used it to place small releases in front of an audience that is in town for something else entirely. This Air Jordan 1 was one of them, dated 8 December 2017 and priced at $160.
The execution is quiet by the standards of the model. White leather forms the base with perforations across the toe box for airflow, black leather takes the mudguard, eyestay and collar, and a soft blue-green named Igloo is spotted onto the heel, the ankle and the outsole. That is the only part of the shoe doing anything unusual.
