Hiroshi Fujiwara had worked with Nike for years by 2014, but Jordan Brand had never handed his studio a model. The Air Jordan 1 was the starting point, and the treatment was restrained to the point of looking almost unchanged on paper.
The shoe borrows the Black Toe colour blocking from 1985 and substitutes sport royal for the red, which quietly ties it to the Royal colourway from the same year. The tongue carries Nike Air branding rather than a Jumpman, matching the original, and the studio's mark is engraved into the heel rather than printed on it.
It released at the end of December 2014 through a small number of doors, and the combination of a first-time partnership and a short run pushed resale well past retail almost immediately. It remains the reference point for the collaboration.
