Self-lacing shoes began as a film prop. Tinker Hatfield designed the Nike MAG for the 1989 sequel to Back to the Future, set in a 2015 that included footwear tightening itself, and Nike spent the decades afterwards slowly catching up to its own fiction: a non-functional MAG auctioned for charity in 2011, a genuinely self-lacing version and the HyperAdapt in 2016, and then the Adapt line, which moved the motor into shoes meant to be played in rather than displayed. The basketball model arrived in 2019 with an app, firmware updates and a charging mat, and a second generation followed. It is an expensive, complicated object built around a function a lace performs for free, which is more or less the point; the value sits in the demonstration.
