Off Noir strips away the wavy overlays' usual metallic finish for tonal black: a black mesh base, a smooth black nubuck mudguard, and the model's signature wavy side panels rendered in a reflective black finish rather than silver. Waxed laces close the concealed lacing system that keeps hardware off the outside of the shoe. The Air Max 97 debuted in 1997 as the first Air Max with visible cushioning running the length of the sole, a structural signature Off Noir keeps even as it inverts the shoe's original silver finish.
A pale, near-white midsole carries the visible Air unit the length of the sole beneath a black waffle-traction outsole, the pair's one bright contrast.
