Eric Avar had spent the Kobe line arguing that a basketball shoe should be low, light and close to the ground. The sixth model made the argument in material.
Its upper is covered in raised polyurethane islands, sized differently across the shoe: larger where abrasion is worst, smaller where flexibility matters. The texture reads as snakeskin and was widely understood that way, but the engineering reason is protection without the weight of added layers. Underneath sit a Phylon midsole, Zoom Air units at the heel and forefoot, and a dual-layer memory foam sockliner.
The All-Star edition arrived for the 2011 game, played at the Lakers’ home arena in Los Angeles: the reason the colourway leans on the city rather than on a team palette. The grey base with offset chlorine blue and daring red mimics the misregistered red-and-cyan of anaglyph 3D printing, and the release was packaged to play on that.
It is one of the more graphic-led entries in a signature line that usually kept its colour blocking simple.
