4E is the widest men's fitting Asics builds, and it exists because the alternative, buying half a size up to gain width, lengthens the shoe in ways that ruin how it flexes and where the arch sits. On a stability shoe that matters more than usual, since the entire mechanism depends on the foot sitting in a particular place above a firmer strip of foam, and a foot spilling over the edge of the platform defeats it. This is the twenty-eighth Kayano in that fitting. The model had just been reworked, moving to a springier midsole compound and floating the plastic shank up off the outsole into the foam, with a redesigned low-profile heel counter working alongside the dual-density support that runs from the heel to the front of the arch. Reviewers rated it one of the stronger stability trainers of its year. This version is black with graphite grey detailing, released in the spring of 2022.
