Smokey Rose over Deep Mars puts two muted reds on a shoe that usually arrives in grey or black. The twenty-eighth Kayano is a transitional model: still built on Dynamic DuoMax, the firm inner wedge that stops the ankle rolling inward, and still carrying the plastic midfoot shank, but softened by a switch to FlyteFoam Blast through the midfoot in place of the firmer Propel foam. A year later the 29 would delete both structural pieces for LiteTruss and drop about ten grams with them. Reviewers at the time described the 28 as livelier and more comfortable than its predecessors without giving up the guidance that makes a Kayano a Kayano. Since 1993, that has meant a supportive heel structure Toshikazu Kayano first modelled on the shell of a beetle. Colour aside, this is a conservative shoe, and its buyers have generally wanted it that way.
