For years, the way to make a running shoe stable was to build something firm into the arch side of the midsole and let it push back. ASICS called its version LITETRUSS, and the GT-2000 carried it for generation after generation.
The twelfth edition abandoned it. In its place came what ASICS calls the 3D Guidance System: a wider midsole base, an increased heel bevel and a flared forefoot, which steady the foot through geometry rather than by resisting it. The company describes the aim as a smoother transition: support that a runner does not feel working. It is the same shift the GEL-Kayano had made a few months earlier with its own 4D Guidance System.
The cushioning changed with it. FF Blast Plus now runs the full length of the shoe, and the heel carries PureGEL, softer and lighter than the traditional GEL compound. Despite the extra foam, the 12 came in slightly lighter than the 11. ASICS put it on sale globally from September 2023.
