The sequence matters here. The collection was presented on a Paris runway as part of Louis Vuitton's spring/summer 2022 menswear show, well before any of it was sold. Virgil Abloh died on 28 November 2021 at forty-one, of a cancer he had kept private since his diagnosis two years earlier. The shoes reached buyers on 19 July 2022, through the house's own website, in nine versions.
This is the least uniform of them and the one that looks most like a show piece. The forefoot is silver-coated canvas; the quarter panel is black suede; the heel overlays refuse to agree: the left is gold calf leather, the right purple suede. A debossed Monogram runs across the whole patchwork regardless of which material it lands on, which is the detail that holds the thing together. A printed LV sits on each medial side.
The cupsole is black with AIR marked along the lateral sidewall. It listed at $2,750, the same price as the plain white low, which is its own kind of statement about what the collection was selling.
