Louis Vuitton opened on Rue Neuve des Capucines in Paris in 1854, making trunks. The patterns came later (Damier in 1888, the Monogram in 1896), and the company became part of LVMH when it merged with Moët Hennessy in 1987. It is, by any measure, an institution with a long memory.
Abloh's appointment in March 2018 was therefore read as a break rather than a continuation: he was the first person of African descent to lead the house's menswear, arrived from a Milan streetwear label he had founded five years earlier, and showed his first collection at Paris Fashion Week that June. He held the role until his death in November 2021.
This shoe is the quietest thing in the collection that resulted. It is white on white: calf leather across the whole upper with the Monogram debossed into it, so the pattern is felt rather than seen. Louis Vuitton branding sits on the back tabs and the off-centre tongue tags, and gold Helvetica text runs the medial side. The cupsole is Nike's original, encapsulated Air and all. It listed at $2,750.
