1999 was a busy year for ASICS. The brand put two cushioned road trainers into the range that season, the Cumulus and the Nimbus, and both are still in production more than two decades on, an unusually long run in a category where models are dropped after three or four updates. They were never meant to compete with each other. The Nimbus took the premium slot with more cushioning and a higher price; the Cumulus sat underneath it as the everyday shoe, lighter on features and easier to justify, aimed at someone logging ordinary miles rather than chasing a marathon time. That division has held ever since, which is why the Cumulus tends to receive the flagship's midsole materials a year or two after they debut higher up. Twenty-three editions in, it remains the least demanding shoe in the brand's cushioned range to buy or to understand.
