Twenty-five versions in, ASICS took the GEL-Cumulus apart. The midsole went from FlyteFoam with a separate GEL unit to a single layer of FF Blast Plus, the brand's lighter and bouncier foam. The GEL became PureGEL, a compound ASICS rates as roughly 65 percent softer than the previous formula, tucked into the rearfoot where you cannot see it. Stack height rose 2mm. Weight fell by about 20 grams, to 266g in a men's sample and 229g in a women's. More than 90 percent of the upper came from recycled material.
Simplification was the theme. A single foam is cheaper to build and easier to tune than a laminate, and moving the GEL inside let ASICS shape the sidewall without a visible window dictating the geometry.
What did not change is the shoe's job. Since 1999 the Cumulus has been the neutral daily trainer in the range: a step under the GEL-Nimbus in cushioning, without the stability structure of the GEL-Kayano. The black jacquard upper with Gunmetal detailing is the least demonstrative way to buy it.
